Victoria Redel will read from her latest novel, I Am You, an unforgettable love story about sex, art, and politics in 1600s Amsterdam. At age eight, Gerta Pieters is dressed as a boy and put to work in the service of the Oosterwijcks, a genteel Dutch family. When Gerta catches the eye of the young Maria Oosterwijck, Gerta’s asked to accompany her to Amsterdam, where Maria will study under a noteworthy Dutch artist. Together, Maria and Gerta navigate the male-dominated world that was Art in the Golden Age.
Paul Grondahl, author and Executive Director of the New York Writers Institute, will serve as Victoria’s conversation partner. Copies of I Am You will be available for purchase from The Chatham Bookstore.
In addition to the reading and lively discussion, enjoy a complimentary grazing table featuring typical foods that served as the subject for the 17th Century still life painters known as the Dutch Masters.
